News/announcements:

    News:

Met with the senior committee members - The short version is that we have been asked to beef up our scout skills and have our books in order prior to a BOR. We need to correlate the computer record and the book record before a BOR.

Need to set up a LIFE BOR for Woody.

    New meeting time is 7-8PM

Need to start planning for Summer Camp and trip.

Summer trip (we are now registered):

This will be a high adventure trip; these are the details:

ASM Anderson is organizing a high adventure trip for this coming summer in the Adirondacks in upper state New York.  The trek center is based out of Camp Massawepie (Otetiana Council, Rochester, NY).  We are looking at a combination canoeing/hiking adventure, but that is still open for discussion as we can do an all canoeing or all hiking adventure as well.  We are looking at the week of July 11-17 as our first choice.  The cost of the trek is $295 for each scout/leader.  Scouts must be at least age 13 by January 1, 2005 and 1st class rank.  You will be required to pass the BSA swim test.  I am hoping we can do this before we depart.  The trip we are looking at will require some extreme hiking requirements (High Peaks region) so we will be doing some training in the Spring and early summer.  The canoeing portion is remote (St Regis area).  All will be a wilderness camping experience. We will be giving preference to the older scouts by rank as the groups are limited in numbers.

Older scouts (First Class, Life, Star, Eagle - we are doing this for you. Are you interested? We have reserved two trips (i.e. we will be split into two groups one of 7 and the other of 11). Those who registered with Mr. Anderson have "first dibs" on these slots. This should be a great trip.

    1. Check out the new troop 12 long term plans page.

     2. Congratulations to Matt P and Connor McM on being chosen as attendee and wait list to be an attendee for the national boy scout jamboree! Now we need to get them to First Class before this summer! Rick and Patrick, you can help me out on this by getting them to work on knots, lashing, first aid and orienteering. It is all in the scout book. Try to encourage them to read it.

Other:

A2. I would like for Jeff S and Jeff L to learn to use troop master so as to assist me with troop records. I would like to set up a meeting where the scouts bring their books and we set up a station where we can call out on one of the churches phones and contact my web site with the computer, then we can reconcile the books with troop computerized records. Scouts will need to be run through this station one at a time, we will start with the scouts who actually remember to bring their books to the meetings!

A2. All Life scouts other then Ryan need to review which merit badges they have with me (Vince, Logan, Eric) as my records in the computer may not match what you have earned. We NEED to do this BEFORE you go for your eagle board of review. Star Scout Woody - this applies to you too. Other scouts - at some time we need to check the troop records against your own as, quite frankly, I make mistakes too.

A3. All scouts less then FIRST CLASS in rank are required to bring their scout books with them to EACH meeting.

   B. Parents: If your scout is taking  medicines on any of our camp outs or trips, please write out instructions for them/us to ensure that they are taken correctly. If there are any special needs or issues, please inform me of them BEFORE we leave!

     C. If you need to contact me, e-mail me here: E-mail Rodger Blake. (Acting Scout master of BSA troop 12)

    D. LIFE SCOUTS - ATTENTION EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATES - Eric and Logan are well on their way towards getting their projects approved. Woody needs a BOR for life. Vince needs to get moving.

        E.   Board of review:  We as a troop need to get Woody to a meeting and make him LIFE ASAP! Joe O needs a SMC and ?BOR. I need Jeff and Jeff to tell me who of the following is ready to advance: Joe O, Josh, Max, Connor, Matt, Jacob's P and M, Christian, etc.

Scheduled Events and Meetings and other notes:

This is our current schedule

Leaders:  Directions to Rodger's house:   Directions from ROUTE 10 - go South from Huntington, about 1.3 miles past (south of) I 64 turn LEFT on to Norwood at the fire station. Go about 0.7-0.8 miles and after an "S" curve (there is a pond on the left before the curve) look for the white house on the left and turn LEFT onto KAYCREST (the sign is often down as cars hit it, if you pass under I64 you missed it). Go about 0.7 miles  up the hill and at the fork at the top of the hill go LEFT onto the flat road (don't go straight onto Belmont), At the "T" intersection just past the "wishing well" at the entrance to Churchill Oaks go LEFT, then drive to the end of the street (Derby Lane) and my house is at the end - #63. If you get lost call 529-7282.

thoughts on sleeping warm:

always use a full length pad (make sure that your scout brings one or checks one out of the scout closet)

bring a stocking cap to sleep in

if you sleep cold, buy/bring a sleeping bag that is rated 5-10 degrees colder then the expected temperature

if you sleep warm, choose a bag rated for the expected temperature

eat a snack before turning in (like peach cobbler)
