Met with the senior committee members - The short version is that we have been asked to beef up our scout skills and have our books in order prior to a BOR. We need to correlate the computer record and the book record before a BOR.
Need to set up a LIFE BOR for Woody.
New meeting time is 7-8PM
Need to start planning for Summer Camp and trip.
Summer trip (we are now registered):
This will be a high adventure trip; these are the details:
Older scouts (First Class, Life, Star, Eagle - we are doing this for you. Are you interested? We have reserved two trips (i.e. we will be split into two groups one of 7 and the other of 11). Those who registered with Mr. Anderson have "first dibs" on these slots. This should be a great trip.
1. Check out the new troop 12 long term plans page.
2. Congratulations to Matt P and Connor McM on being chosen as attendee and wait list to be an attendee for the national boy scout jamboree! Now we need to get them to First Class before this summer! Rick and Patrick, you can help me out on this by getting them to work on knots, lashing, first aid and orienteering. It is all in the scout book. Try to encourage them to read it.
Other:
A2. I would like for Jeff S and Jeff L to learn to use troop master so as to assist me with troop records. I would like to set up a meeting where the scouts bring their books and we set up a station where we can call out on one of the churches phones and contact my web site with the computer, then we can reconcile the books with troop computerized records. Scouts will need to be run through this station one at a time, we will start with the scouts who actually remember to bring their books to the meetings!
A2. All Life scouts other then Ryan need to review which merit badges they have with me (Vince, Logan, Eric) as my records in the computer may not match what you have earned. We NEED to do this BEFORE you go for your eagle board of review. Star Scout Woody - this applies to you too. Other scouts - at some time we need to check the troop records against your own as, quite frankly, I make mistakes too.
A3. All scouts less then FIRST CLASS in rank are required to bring their scout books with them to EACH meeting.
B. Parents: If your scout is taking medicines on any of our camp outs or trips, please write out instructions for them/us to ensure that they are taken correctly. If there are any special needs or issues, please inform me of them BEFORE we leave!
C. If you need to contact me, e-mail me here: E-mail Rodger Blake. (Acting Scout master of BSA troop 12)
D. LIFE SCOUTS - ATTENTION EAGLE SCOUT CANDIDATES - Eric and Logan are well on their way towards getting their projects approved. Woody needs a BOR for life. Vince needs to get moving.
E. Board of review: We as a troop need to get Woody to a meeting and make him LIFE ASAP! Joe O needs a SMC and ?BOR. I need Jeff and Jeff to tell me who of the following is ready to advance: Joe O, Josh, Max, Connor, Matt, Jacob's P and M, Christian, etc.
Scheduled Events and Meetings and other notes:
Leaders: Directions to Rodger's house: Directions from ROUTE 10 - go South from Huntington, about 1.3 miles past (south of) I 64 turn LEFT on to Norwood at the fire station. Go about 0.7-0.8 miles and after an "S" curve (there is a pond on the left before the curve) look for the white house on the left and turn LEFT onto KAYCREST (the sign is often down as cars hit it, if you pass under I64 you missed it). Go about 0.7 miles up the hill and at the fork at the top of the hill go LEFT onto the flat road (don't go straight onto Belmont), At the "T" intersection just past the "wishing well" at the entrance to Churchill Oaks go LEFT, then drive to the end of the street (Derby Lane) and my house is at the end - #63. If you get lost call 529-7282.
4/12/05 - cross over of 7 WEBELOS from pack 43 - I need scouts at Our Lady of Fatima church from 7-8PM. I need leaders too. Complication is that I have a 5:30PM meeting and I do not know when it will end. We need 4 books from scout closet an one red neckerchief if we can find on in the scout closet. The ceremony will be in the cafeteria in the basement of the school.
4/18/05 - prep candidates for first class, maybe begin BOR - so wear first class - we will finish FC requirements for Matt, Connor, etc.
4/25/05 alternate date for elections or we may do a BOR - probably a BOR..
5/2/05 meeting - prep for camping climbing trip - meal plan - assemble troop gear.
5/6-7/05 - Spring High Adventure Climbing Trip - We will meet at the church at 5PM. We will drive to KY dining on the road ($ for road meal). We will arrive at Torrent Falls Scenic Resort and set up our tents at about 9PM - with all due respect to Mark and Kathy (our hosts for the weekend). On Saturday the adventure begins at 9AM. We will divide up into two groups - those working on the climbing merit badge and those who are not. We need at least 6 and no more then 10 scouts for the climbing merit badge. If more then 10 apply then only the first 10 will get to participate. Scouts MUST be age 14 or older to take the climbing merit badge. All other scouts will enjoy the amenities of the resort - catch and release pond fishing and the "Via Ferrata" or IRON PATH. Divided into 5 sections of increasing difficulty, this horizontal climbing route features a self -belaying cable system for safety. The scouts will make their way along the cliff face in groups with one adult per 5 scouts (ok dad's its time to pay the piper). The scouts in the climbing merit badge group will join us on the Via Ferrata at about 4 PM when their class is done. The we drive the scouts home to arrive back at the church by about 4:30PM. * I know what you're thinking - isn't this the new high adventure sport that is taking Europe by storm? Isn't this the only Via Ferrata in the Country? Wasn't this featured in the October 2004 issue of Scouting Magazine? Yes. Cost: $39 for climbing merit badge (includes Via Ferrata), $29 Adult or $26 Scout for the Via Ferrata only. I will ask the troop committee if the troop can do something to decrease these costs some what. consent forms: So my son is going to climb on a cliff face in a climbing harness with two self locking carabineers attached to it so that he is always clipped to the self belaying system by one of them - there's got to be a consent for right? Again yes, both for the Troop as well as their forms. I will hand these out or you can Download the wavers form their web site - near bottom of page - there are three to down load. Wow - what a trip.
Summer camp - location - Arrowhead - Week 3 - 6/26-7/2/05 - Chief Cornstalk site - merit badges - a chance for honor in our home council - can we meet the standards of the Iron troop of 2001? - are you ready to shower and powder? - this year we have an OA tap out. Are you worthy? Can you withstand the ordeal?
Summer trip - for FC and above only - 7/9-7/17/05 - in the Adirondacks of upstate New York - WE ARE IN! We have registered for two trips one is a 7 man group the other I believe is 11. This will be coordinated by Mr. Anderson. Those who signed up with him have "first dibs" on available spaces. These will be serious hiking/canoeing trips so we need to get in shape and prepare for this. These should be great trips. More details to follow. These are the details so far:
ASM Anderson is organizing a high adventure trip for this coming summer in the Adirondacks in upper state New York. The trek center is based out of Camp Massawepie (Otetiana Council, Rochester, NY). We are looking at a combination canoeing/hiking adventure, but that is still open for discussion as we can do an all canoeing or all hiking adventure as well. We are looking at the week of July 11-17 as our first choice. The cost of the trek is $295 for each scout/leader. Scouts must be at least age 13 by January 1, 2005 and 1st class rank. You will be required to pass the BSA swim test. I am hoping we can do this before we depart. The trip we are looking at will require some extreme hiking requirements (High Peaks region) so we will be doing some training in the Spring and early summer. The canoeing portion is remote (St Regis area). All will be a wilderness camping experience. We will be giving preference to the older scouts by rank as the groups are limited in numbers.
7/18-23/05 - WILDERNESS RANGERS - This summer camp is run out of the camp at Dills Mill where we went to summer camp last year. This is run by the council, not the troop, if you are interested, you must sign up with them! To attend you MUST be 13 and a first class scout by 7/10/05! You must have either: environmental science, hiking, camping, swimming, first aid, or personal fitness. You must have 2 of: back packing, fishing, landscape architecture, forestry, nature, fish and wild life, engineering, nature, botany, soil and water conservation, bird study, geology, astronomy, wilderness survival, astronomy, cooking or safety. You need your class A uniform. If you go you will: hike Cranberry glades, see a fly catcher, visit the WV wild life museum - a trout hatchery - the "bunker" at the Greenbrier, Fort Summit, Cass Scenic RR, the Green Bank radio telescope, and Deer Mountain battle field! You will electroshock and net fish and learn how to net turkeys and other birds. See a raptor and snake demonstration. A great experience! $80 fee - you can't eat for this - what a bargain! An incredible one of a kind (for the country) experience.
The next Rocket building session for the fulfillment of the Space Exploration Merit Badge is ... We'll have to set this up after camp. I would appreciate it if you (scouts) would work on the requirements.
Looks like we need to plan the agenda for more meetings! What do you want to do this summer. If you don't tell me how can we arrange it?
We hope to meet with Judge "Chuck" Chambers - we may go to "night court" too!
